What was internal tax?

The internal tax was prevalent during the Colonial America times, during the 17th and 18th centuries. An internal tax was meant for the colonists to pay extremely high taxes on their goods purchased and imported in an effort to raise money for Britain. They were often harsh for the colonists since they practically made everyday goods scarce and expensive. There were also taxes imposed called the external tax, which was more enforced on things directly associated with trade and commerce. Both taxes put too much pressure on the colonists and eventually became one of the key contributors that led to the American Revolution.
